Wayside Cross

Outside St. Bartholomew's Church, Dežanovac, Croatia

Unlike wayside crosses in most of Europe, many in this part of Croatia place an image of the Virgin Mary directly below the crucifix, with no other figure or symbol. I have also observed examples of this usage in Austria and Bavaria.

The inscription in Croatian below the image of Mary is "ISUSE - Vjero naša - Tvoji sma! ISUSE - Ufanje naše - Tješi nas! ISUSE - Ljubavi naša - Spasi nas! ISUSE - Tebi isTobom živimo i umiremo!" In English: "Jesus our faith, we are yours! Jesus our hope, comfort us! Jesus our love, save us! Jesus, we live and die with you. 1932."
